Nadar como sirena, una actividad aún inédita que quiere pisar fuerte en Argentina
Paula Olmedo se calza su traje de sirena y se sumerge en las profundidades del lago Epuyen, en Esquel. En las frías aguas de la Patagonia lo único que escucha es su corazón que le dice que se quede más tiempo en las profundidades. Mueve la monoaleta y sus brazos flotan como si estuviera en el espacio. Abajo del agua Paula es feliz y logra la paz que a veces le falta en el mundo terrestre.
La conocida como la sirena de Esquel explicó que “la relaja mucho estar debajo del agua. Cuanto más tiempo logro estar es mejor. Por ahora, aguanto hasta un minuto y medio. Mi idea es estar cada vez más sumergida. Estoy conectada con otras sirenas españolas que charlamos por las redes sociales que pueden estar hasta tres o cuatro minutos”, contó Paula.
Aprender a ser sirena
A Paula le gustaban las hadas y los duendes. Esquel es tierra de bosques encantados y árboles milenarios. Cada uno de ellos guarda una leyenda. Entonces, el algoritmo de su Instagram le empezó a ofrecer contenidos de sirenas de otras partes del mundo. “Encontré que había sirenas por todo el mundo nadando en todos los mares. En cambio, acá en el país no es tan común -recordó la chica-. Me compré mi primera monoaleta, cosí mi primera piel de cola de sirena y también me hago mis tops para completar el vestuario”.
Con su exposición en las redes sociales, Paula se siente tranquila. “Algunos me tratan de loca y otros me apoyan -explicó la sirena de Esquel-. Mis amigos y familia fueron los primeros en apoyarme desde que dije ´quiero ser una sirena´. La gente me saluda y me piden fotos”.
En los Estados Unidos, la comunidad de merfolks, las mujeres que se personifican como sirenas, no para de crecer. Compiten en la confección de elaboradas cola de silicona que cuestan hasta USD 3.500, las usan para nadar en piscinas y en el mar y se reúnen en conferencias por todo el país.
Cuando no está personalizada con su monoaleta debajo del agua o en las prácticas en la pileta de Esquel, Paula es profesora de nivel inicial. Le da clases a nenes de 4 años que saludan con alegría a la “seño sirena”. Por ahora, sus alumnos nunca la vieron personificada como sirena, pero si vieron sus fotos en Instagram “y abrieron los ojos muy grandes. Se les notaba la sorpresa”, se río Paula mientras le contaba a Infobae ese momento.
Para convertirse en sirena, Paula tomó un curso online de apnea para aprender a estar el mayor tiempo posible bajo el agua. La base de este deporte, tiene como base la suspensión voluntaria de la respiración dentro del agua mientras se recorren largas distancias o se desciende hasta grandes profundidades. La chica practica en una pileta de Esquel y en verano realiza excursiones al lago Epuyen. “Ahí me siento una sirena verdadera por un rato -se entusiasmó Paula al contarlo-. Me sumerjo con mi traje y logro una relajación total. Pongo la mente en blanco y sólo me digo ´aguantá un poquito más´. En ese momento, siento una libertad total. Creo que debe ser parecido a volar”.
Entonces, sumado a la apnea Paula le agrega el nado de sirena bajo el agua y con eso practica un deporte nuevo que se denomina mermaiding. Este consiste en nadar con las piernas juntas en impulsos que nacen desde la cadera. Además, para poder emular a estas criaturas mitad pez y mitad mujeres es necesario poder aguantar la respiración bajo el agua el mayor tiempo posible. Por eso, la apnea es un trabajo conjunto de capacidad Por ello se practican las apneas que requieren no solo de trabajo pulmonar, sino también de un estado mental que permita concentrarse y pasarla bien mientras se restringe el ingreso de oxígeno.
Escuela de sirenas
Julián Losada es director de Ohana Free Divers en Buenos Aires, una escuela de buceo y natación que incluye instrucción de apnea y mermaid. El joven explicó en diálogo con Infobae que “En la actualidad la práctica de nadar como sirena crece más que el buceo en todo el mundo. Es más en muchos acuarios del mundo se están cambiando los peces por seres humanos profesionales de este estilo de natación”.
Paula lo ve a futuro como una salida laboral. “Se puede hacer eventos, cumpleaños y hasta fiestas en piletas -explicó la chica de Esquel-. La otra opción en acuarios lo veo más lejano en Argentina, pero me encantaría ser una sirena y saludar a los chicos a través de un vidrio desde la profundidades de una pecera gigante”.
Losada explicó que es muy atractivo porque “podés comprar la fantasía de que sos una sirena, un ser mitológico muy atractivo”. Para hacer mermaid, es necesario tomar un curso de apnea. Para eso es fundamental un instructor que acompañe el proceso. Losada es un especialista en nadar en las profundidades sin equipo de buceo y le contó a Infobae sus experiencias más fuertes. “Escuchás a las ballenas y hasta podés mirarlas a los ojos -relató Julián-. También escuchás el ruidito de los peces cuando comen en los corales. En el agua lográs una conexión con el mundo marino que es única y también con vos mismo. Escuchás tu corazón como nunca”.
