Tormenta Geotérmica amenaza a la tierra
El Centro de Predicción del Clima Espacial (SWPC) del Servicio Meteorológico Nacional en Estados Unidos advirtió que una tormenta geomagnética de clase G2, provocada por el Sol, podría impactar sobre la Tierra este jueves. Este fenómeno comienza con una explosión en la superficie solar. Las tormentas geomagnéticas se originan por una eyección de masa coronal -onda hecha de radiación y viento solar- desprendida del Sol.
Si la actividad está orientada hacia la Tierra, puede resultar en un importante exceso de viento solar y entonces afectar nuestro planeta. Sin embargo, en niveles bajos, no representa un daño para los humanos. En esta oportunidad, el informe emitido el 31 de agosto por el SWPC precisó que, dada las “condiciones, es probable que cause una tormenta geomagnética menor”.
El SWPC advirtió también sobre la posibilidad de que la tormenta geomagnética, presente en la Tierra desde el lunes, se convierta en una de nivel G2.
AURORAS O DAÑOS EN LA TIERRA
Estas tormentas son capaces de dañar redes eléctricas y transformadores, interferir con los satélites, interrumpir las comunicaciones de radio y producir auroras mucho más al sur del planeta de lo habitual.
El Centro de Clima Espacial reportó varios eventos explosivos que estuvieron ocurriendo en el Sol en los últimos días, con incidencia en la Tierra. Por ejemplo, se detectaron auroras en el sur de Alaska; en Nueva York; en Vermont; en New Hampshire y en Maine.
ESCALA TORMENTA GEOMAGNÉTICA
Las tormentas geomagnéticas se clasifican en una escala del 1 al 5, siendo 1 la más débil y 5 la que tiene el mayor potencial de daño. Las tormentas de nivel 2 o G2 son moderadas y no representan un peligro para los humanos.
Sin embargo, incluso una tormenta geomagnética G1 podría provocar problemas: en tanto podría haber fallas en la red eléctrica y mínimos impactos en las operaciones satelitales.
Además, pueden hacer visibles auroras en latitudes fuera de lo común. El nivel de impacto y de las auroras están sujetos al de la escala de tormenta geomagnética.
TORMENTA GEOMAGNÉTICA G5
La tormenta de estas características más potente de la historia ocurrió el 2 de septiembre de 1859. Fue el famoso Evento Carrington, de nivel G5. Informes de la época hablan de la interrupción completa de los telégrafos, fallas en brújulas de barcos en altamar y de apariciones de auroras boreales en lugares impensados. En un mundo tan dependiente de la conexión, un suceso similar al Evento Carrington podría generar daños incalculables. A principios de 2021, Dmitri Vibe, miembro de la Academia de Ciencias de Rusia, arrojó un pronóstico al respecto. El investigador declaró que durante los próximos once años -el tiempo de duración estimado del nuevo ciclo solar-, las tormentas geo magnéticas que azotan el planeta pasarían de considerarse eventos inusuales a transformarse en parte de la vida cotidiana.
